Where do Canada’s Federal Parties Stand on Nature and Climate?

What the 2025 election could mean for climate action and biodiversity

To help voters make an informed decision, 16 environmental organizations invited the five main federal parties to complete a survey to present their positions on key environmental priorities.

The 2025 Canadian federal election is taking place on Monday, April 28th. As the date approaches, Canadians are reflecting on important issues, and for many, the environment is at the top of the list. The impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss are significant and extend far beyond nature itself, affecting everything from our economy to our health, and much more.

To help voters make an informed decision, 16 environmental organizations invited the five main federal parties to complete a survey to present their positions on key environmental priorities. The questions presented topics on climate-related action, biodiversity protection, environmental funding, Indigenous-led conservation, environmental justice, and shifting to a zero-emission clean economy.

This election outcome will affect how environmental challenges are addressed in the coming years and whether or not we achieve long-term climate and sustainability goals and targets. The results provide insights into where Canada’s major political parties stand on pressing environmental issues and their dedication to achieving national and international biodiversity commitments.

Since the last election, the climate crisis has worsened – biodiversity loss is accelerating at an alarming rate, and devastating climate-related events are occurring more frequently. It is clear that the stakes are higher than ever for humans, wildlife and the planet.

While the NET was not directly involved in conducting the survey, and is strictly a non-partisan organization, amplifying this work will help Canadians become more aware of the environmental platforms of the country’s political parties, and will help when considering how environmental issues align with values before heading to the polls.

Here is a selection of key links to learn about the survey and read the party responses:

The survey ensures that we can demand transparency to hold political parties accountable for their promises. Use your vote and let your voice be heard. Staying informed about where political parties stand on key issues empowers us to advocate for policies, plans and strategies that will help create a cleaner, more resilient, biodiverse future.
